The driving error of an elderly Sarasota driver, Evert O. Gustafsson, 89, resulted in the death of a motorcyclist on October 23, 2011. Mr. Gustafsson was driving a 1992 Mercury convertible on Baywood Drive at the time of the accident. The accident occurred when he pulled onto the Tamiami Trail and failed to observe the right of way. His vehicle crossed into both lanes of southbound traffic on the Trail.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., Robert F. Schneider was driving his 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on Tamiami Trail when he was struck by Mr. Gustafsson. The collision occurred near the intersection of Tamiami Trail and Baywood Drive, just south of Gulf Gate Drive in Sarasota. Mr. Schneider, aged 65, was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Tragically, he was thrown from the motorcycle and ultimately died of his injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the accident. They determined that Mr. Gustafsson's failure to yield the right of way to Mr. Schneider and crossing into multiple lanes resulted in the fatal collision. He was cited for the traffic violation. The Florida Highway Patrol also determined that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Our office extends our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Mr. Schneider following this tragic Sarasota motorcycle accident.
