A locally known basketball and skateboarding coach was tragically killed in a Bradenton car crash on U.S. 41 on Friday, February 8, 2013. According to reports, the deadly auto accident took place near the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus around 7:30 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that the deceased, 35-year-old Daniel P. Giguere of Bradenton, was driving southbound near Seagate Drive on U.S. 41 when he lost control of his car. He then drove his 2004 Nissan 350Z into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle, sending his car spinning and into a curb and fence on the east side of 41. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The other driver involved was headed northbound on U.S. 41 in his 2002 Ford Ranger and was struck by Giguere’s vehicle. Driver Mijail Hurtado-Chavez, 22, of Sarasota, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Blake Hospital in Bradenton for medical treatment.

Police are asking for witnesses of this crash to contact them as they are still investigating this accident. They do not believe alcohol is a factor; however, there is a possibility that another car hit Mr. Giguere sending his car out of control.

Giguere was the physical education teacher and boys basketball coach at Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences. He also taught golf and loved skateboarding. He worked for the nonprofit Sk8Skool, which runs Payne Park’s skate park. He was known as “Coach Dan” to many students and parents in the community. He was remembered by many friends and family who gathered at First Baptist Church in Sarasota, as well as those who held a candlelight vigil at the skate park.

The Sarasota accident attorneys at Mallard Perez would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, coworkers, and students who have been affected by the loss of Dan Giguere, and we would like to wish Mijail Hurtado-Chavez a full recovery.
