Kine Stegavik was hit on Wednesday night while she was attempting to cross Busch Boulevard. She was first hit by a Nissan Altima and then a Ford Focus. The driver of the Focus tried to avoid the accident but was unable to. She died at the scene.
Saturday, December 1, Omar James Jeter was hit by a car and killed while he was trying to cross Hillsborough Avenue. He was not in a crosswalk. The driver left the scene. Due to an anonymous tip, Fernando Lazaro Lahera Chibas was charged with the death of a pedestrian. He admitted to leaving the scene. Tampa Police Department said if Chibas was not impaired and stayed at the scene, he would not have been charged with a crime.
On Sunday, 8-year-old Elijah Crayton was fatally injured when he was hit by a car near his house. The Largo Police Department says Crayton was sitting on a skateboard when he was hit.
Monday night, a pedestrian was hit by a car on MacDill Avenue. The driver was not charged with a crime as he was unable to avoid the accident. The pedestrian has not life threatening injuries.
7,039 accidents involving pedestrians were reported in Florida in 2011. 497 pedestrians died. There were 5,013 bicycle crashes with 120 deaths in 2011.
