On the last day of November, a husband and wife took their motorcycle out for a ride. Sadly, they never returned as they were killed in a motorcycle crash involving a garbage truck. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal crash took place just prior to 3:00 p.m. in front of the Grove Glen East Subdivision.

The deadly wreck occurred off Lakeland Highlands Road, and it appeared that the couple was heading home from the grocery store. Witnesses of the crash indicated that groceries were strung out all over the accident scene. Authorities later confirmed that the husband and wife just left Publix supermarket at Lake Miriam Plaza on South Florida Avenue when the crash took place.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office identified the two motorcyclists as 36-year-old Yvette Marie Cox and 48-year-old Michael Stanley Cox. Investigators indicated that the couple was on their bike headed south when they were cut off by a garbage truck. The truck crossed in front of the motorcycle and caused them to crash. However, investigators said the driver of the garbage truck applied the emergency brakes to bring the truck to a stop before impact.

Authorities indicated that their investigation revealed neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. Investigators found the wife underneath the garbage truck and her husband was located in the middle of the intersection next to his bike.

Was this accident a result of truck driver negligence in Florida? Officials are still investigating this crash to determine the cause.

Mallard Perez would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Cox.
