Two Boy Scout leaders in Utah have made national news for their less than exemplary conduct during a field trip in Utah’s Goblin Valley State Park. According to NBC news, the men took eight Boy Scouts into the ancient Utah desert where they located a large rock that they believed to be on the verge of falling over.

Instead of the leaders reporting the rock concern to authorities, they took matters into their own hands and pushed the 2,000 pound boulder over. Before they destroyed the stone formation, one of the leaders decided to video tape the other leader knocking over the rock—a sign of Boy Scout leadership failings. The video not only shows Boy Scout leader Glenn Taylor pushing over the massive rock, but the other leader Dave Hall telling him to “wiggle it.”

After the 170 million-year-old rock formation toppled over, the men and crowd cheered. Upon posting this video to Facebook, others learned what they had done. Now, these Boy Scout leaders may face felony charges since defacing state property is illegal. Additionally, these leaders did not follow the Boy Scouts’ principle of “Leave No Trace” when exploring the outdoors.

Once this video was released on YouTube, it was revealed that Glenn Taylor had pushed this heavy rock over only one month after filing a personal injury lawsuit. Now critics are wondering if he really suffered a disability following a car accident he was involved in.

Sadly, adults like this—guilty of reprehensible behavior—are leaders of today’s youth. Not only are these Boy Scout leaders less than stellar, but other leaders in the Boy Scouts of America organization have been in the news recently for other outrageous behaviors. Leadership is a vital part of the Scouting program. However, it seems as if this organization has had many Boy Scout leadership failings recently, such as lax supervision and child abuse claims.
