On December 7, 2011, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a Sarasota collision involving two vehicles resulted in a 65-year-old man being ejected from his car. The accident occurred on US 41 and Landings Boulevard in Sarasota. Involved in the crash were James Pier and Ruth Shulan, 85.

At the time of the crash, Ms. Shulan was traveling northbound on US 41 approaching a traffic light at the Landings Boulevard intersection. The signal was green at the time. Unfortunately, Ms. Shulan then made a left hand turn onto Landings Boulevard without yielding the right of way. By doing so, she pulled directly into the pathway of Mr. Pier.

During the collision, the front of Ms. Shulan’s car struck the left side of Mr. Pier’s vehicle, causing it to spin counterclockwise and flip over. The car continued heading southwest until it hit a curb. At this point, Mr. Pier was ejected from the vehicle. When paramedics arrived on the scene, they transported him to Black Medical Center. His condition is listed as serious.

Crash investigators have determined that Ms. Shulan broke the law by failing to yield to Mr. Pier. As such, she was charged with a Violation of Right of Way - Left Turn.

Our thoughts and prayers for a quick and full recovery go out to Mr. Pier and his loved ones following this frightening accident.
