On March 8, 2014, a motorcycle and car collided on Saturday afternoon in Bradenton. This motorcycle crash on Cortez Road involved a 90-year-old driver and an 18-year-old motorcyclist. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist from Bradenton died of his injuries sustained in the wreck.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the motorcyclist was traveling east on Cortez Road in the outside lane on his 2004 Suzuki bike when a 2012 Buick La Crosse attempted to make a left turn onto 106th Street West. Investigators revealed that the Buick driver,’ William H. Mitchell, of Bradenton, was driving in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and failed to yield the right of way to the bike when he attempted to turn left. This caused the motorcyclist to strike the right side of Mitchell’s car with his bike.

This fatal accident occurred at 4:20 p.m. According to witnesses, the scene was quickly taped off, traffic was backed up to the Cortez Bridge, and some saw a white sheet covering a body. Sadly, the motorcyclist died at the accident scene, even though he was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash. He was later identified as Hugo Arellano, 18, of Bradenton.

According to FHP, Mitchell reported minor injuries, and his 80-year-old passenger didn’t report any injuries. Troopers did say that charges are pending in this case.

Mallard Perez would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Hugo Arellano during this difficult time, and we would like to remind all drivers to watch out for motorcycles on the road.
