Motorcycle accidents are violent events that often involve motorcyclists being thrown from their bikes, or ejected, upon impact. Unfortunately, it seems as if freedom comes at a price for motorcyclists and their passengers. Greater injuries are often the result, such as multiple fractures, broken clavicles, internal injuries, head injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, paralysis, and more. These injuries frequently leave motorcyclists with permanent disabilities.

Because motorcyclists face a higher risk of injury than anyone else on the road, it is important for all motorists to be aware of what types of accidents cause motorcyclists to be thrown  from their bikes.

  • Accidents with cars – Drivers of passenger vehicles often fail to see motorcycles approaching, which is why drivers will pull out in front of motorcycles and attempt to make left- or right-hand turns in front of them. When drivers fail to look out for motorcycles, they turn into their paths—typically causing the motorcyclist to be ejected upon impact.
  • Crashes with semi-trucks – Truck drivers have large blind spots. If a motorcyclist is caught in a blind spot, a trucker may change lanes or turn unknowingly. Additionally, motorcycles are much smaller than cars, making a bike hard for a truck driver to see. While truck drivers have the responsibility to look out for motorcycles, motorcyclists are wise to stay clear of the “No Zones” – the truck-drivers’ blind spots.

Truck drivers also sometimes rear-end motorcyclists because they have a higher road clearance and have a difficult time determining if motorcycles are traveling at a slower rate of speed in front of them.

There are many other factors that could cause a motorcyclist to be thrown from his bike, including:

  • Unexpected road hazards like potholes
  • Gravel or uneven pavement
  • Slippery conditions such as grease on the ground
  • Motorists opening car doors into approaching motorcyclists’ paths
  • Cars making U-turns with little or no warning

When motorcyclists are traveling at fairly high rates of speed and they have to bring their bikes to quick stops in attempts to avoid crashing, they are often thrown from their motorcycles and suffer serious and often life-threatening injuries.
