For victims of a Florida car crash, a herniated disc is a debilitating injury that can prolong the physical and emotional pain associated with the accident. This injury involves the discs, which separate the vertebrae in the spine. They act as a cushion and shock absorber when the body moves. When the discs are moved out of place, they can press against spinal nerves, resulting in severe pain. The following is an overview of the various treatment options for this injury.

Following a Florida car wreck, a herniated disc can be treated in any of the following ways:

  • Over the counter pain medications, if pain is mild to moderate. These include ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or naproxen.
  • Prescription medication, such as codeine or a hydrocodone-acetaminophen combination.
  • Nerve pain medications such as gabapentin, pregabaline, duloxetine, tramadol, and amitriptyline.
  • Muscle relaxers, such as diazepam or cyclobenzaprine.
  • Cortisone injects that contain corticosteroids to suppress inflammation. These are typically given by injection directly into the area around the spinal nerves.
  • Physical therapy to learn positions and exercises that will minimize the pain of the herniated disc.
  • Physical therapy to build core strength and stability.
  • Heat or ice applied to the injury site.
  • Traction.
  • Ultrasound.
  • Electrical stimulation.
  • Braces for the neck or lower back.
  • Surgery to remove the protruding portion of the disc, or in severe cases, the entire disc. If the entire disc is removed, the vertebrae will either need to be fused together, or an artificial disc will need to be implanted.

Surgery is typically the last step in treatment, and only used if symptoms are not improving or are getting progressively worse.
