Red light cameras are controversial, as many people oppose the installation of such equipment for revenue gain; however, law enforcement indicates this equipment can be very valuable in catching drivers who have caused Florida crashes due to running red lights. In fact, an entire Sarasota auto accident was recently caught on tape by a red light camera at the intersection of Fruitville Road and Highway 301.

This camera revealed that a driver traveling around 50 mph in a 35 mph zone ran a red light after the light was red for about five seconds, and crashed into another driver, seriously injuring her.  Because of this camera, the injured driver has evidence that cannot be disputed.

A Look at Traffic Cameras

Red light traffic cameras are designed to be mounted above the traffic light or at the corner of the intersection and take photos of vehicles that enter the intersection after the light has turned red. Although many believe the purpose of these cameras is to generate revenue by ticketing drivers, police indicate that the purpose behind these cameras is to catch dangerous motorists who intentionally run red lights and cause wrecks.

In 2007, 900 people were killed due to red light runners, and 153,000 people were injured in red light crashes.

So, why aren’t red light cameras enough to stop people from running red lights or at least remind them of the importance of stopping at a red light?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study in 2011 that showed cities with red light cameras had a decrease in fatal red light collisions. In fact, the IIHS indicates that a major decrease in injuries has taken place since the installation of these cameras.

Hearing about stories like the one above and just how quickly life can be changed, should remind motorists of why stopping at red lights is so important and how red light cameras are valuable evidence in a case such as this one.
