Many bicyclists have been caught out in an unexpected storm. While rainstorms not only drench cyclists, making them miserable, wet weather also puts bicyclists at risk for being hit by cars and trucks.

It is important that you remind your son that rain affects drivers’ vision and control of their vehicles. Many people drive too fast in rainy weather and lose control of their cars. When this happens, they may swerve off the road and right into him or another cyclist who happens to be sharing the road at that exact time. Other drivers have a hard time seeing while driving in the rain, and an even harder time seeing something so small as a bicycle.

For these reasons, it is important that all bicyclists who are on the roads in rainy weather make sure they are paying full attention to the road and traffic around them, as well as do the following things:

  • Obey all traffic signals and stop signs
  • Ride with the flow of traffic
  • Be visible by wearing something reflective
  • Ensure headlights and tail lights are working
  • Never ride while listening to music or talking on a cell phone

Because wet weather does put bicyclists at risk, it is best to avoid riding a bike in the rain. However, if your son gets caught out in an unexpected rain storm and it isn’t possible to avoid riding in the rain, make sure he understands that the best thing he can do is be alert and follow the tips mentioned above.
