Bicycle helmet laws in Florida are often confused for motorcycle helmet laws. Because Florida is a state known for repealing its universal motorcycle helmet law, many people think that there aren’t helmet laws in Florida; however, this couldn’t be further from the truth. While our state certainly doesn’t have the strictest rules on helmets, there are certain rules that apply to both motorcyclists and bicyclists.

For bicycle riders in the Sunshine State, the law states those who are 16-years-old and younger are required to wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted and fastened securely. Additionally, the bicycle helmet must meet the American National Standards Institute for bicycle helmet standards and the standards of the Snell Memorial Foundation. If a bicyclist is transporting a passenger, such as a child riding in a child’s seat or trailer attached to the bicycle, that child or any passenger has to wear a properly fitting approved bicycle helmet as well.

While many people like riding bicycles without their helmets, adults and those older than 16-years-old should know that bicycle helmets have been known to help reduce head trauma, brain injuries, and death in the event of a bicycle accident. Although many people just want to hop on their bikes and go, bicyclists need to obey the law.

It is important to follow the law and wear your bicycle helmet while riding a bike on the streets of Sarasota. Because research has shown that bicycle helmets help reduce head injuries, we encourage you to wear your helmet the next time you ride your bike and share this information with others on Facebook.
