In a horrific grand jury report that has shocked the nation, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky has been charged with sexually abusing nearly 20 child victims. Child abuse like this, which occurred over a period of approximately 15 years, is all too common. The National Institutes of Health states that over 3 million reports of such abuse occur every year in the United States alone.

After experiencing this type of trauma, many victims and their families do not know where to turn for help. There are two sources of help that are vital following an incident of Sarasota child sexual abuse. These include:

  1. Legal representation: an experienced, sensitive attorney will help protect your legal rights.
  2. Therapeutic treatment: an experienced, sensitive therapist will help the victim and his or her family begin the healing process.

Seeking emotional treatment immediately following the incident also helps prevent the abuser from claiming that the child waited too long to seek treatment. The abuser may claim that the therapist or parents may have implanted the memory in the child’s brain.

An experienced attorney should be able to offer assistance in obtaining an appropriate therapist for your child. Family members, friends, and Child Protective Services may also offer recommendations.
