Tuesday, September 11, 2012, Maisa Alvarez was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and attempted first-degree murder for stabbing her son several times. As the boy lie in bed, officials say, Alvarez chained his hands together and stabbed him in the chest with a steak knife. While the mother was chaining his hands together, he awoke and tried to defend himself.

After she stabbed her son an estimated 10 times, she called 911 to report the stabbing. She was taken to jail and he was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando. His wounds were not life threatening and he is in stable condition.

Since this is a child abuse case, the child’s name is not being released to protect his identity.

Alvarez is reported as saying that she did not know what she was doing until her son began to defend himself. She later told police she heard voices that directed her to kill the boy. She admits to thinking about killing herself, but when she couldn’t, she turned to her son,

She is being held without bail and her first court appearance was Wednesday, September 12, 2012.

The father was out of town on business during the attack. The father is of no threat to the boy, therefore DCF plans to keep the child in the father's custody
