Truck accidents occur far too often, causing serious injuries to both truckers and the motorists who share the road with large trucks. That is why many employers are participating in the Drive Safely Work Week campaign, which takes place from October 6-10, 2014.

Safe Driving Reminders

During the 2014 Drive Safely Work Week, truck drivers are reminded to use their seat belts, avoid driving distracted or using cell phones, obtain adequate rest before driving, and stay away from taking medications that can make them drowsy behind the wheel. In addition, because driving requires a trucker’s full attention, truck drivers should be sure to watch the road, look ahead to anticipate traffic problems, and be patient behind the wheel.

Some of the additional steps truck drivers can take to adopt safe driving practices and reduce truck accidents include:

  • Inspecting their trucks. Truck drivers should always look at their tires to make sure they have the proper air pressure and that they are not worn or damaged. Additionally, truckers should perform a visual inspection before they get on the road to make sure their headlights, taillights, and brake lights are working.
  • Securing their cargo. Unsecured and unbalanced cargo has contributed to a significant number of truck crashes. Truck drivers should carefully check their cargo to make sure it does not become a hazard during transport.
  • Being safe and alert. This includes taking the appropriate rest and sleep breaks required by law, avoiding alcohol and drugs while driving, and avoiding distracted driving behaviors such as eating, drinking, smoking, texting, or talking on the phone.

While most truck drivers have been trained to do the aforementioned things, even experienced drivers should consider the risks they face on the road and recommit to following safe driving practices that will help to protect themselves and others who share the road.

Some truck accidents may be unavoidable, but these tips and reminders can help reduce the likelihood of truck crashes caused by drowsy driving, distracted driving, and unsafe trucks.
