Many tire blowouts have led to serious rollover accidents and serious injuries in Sarasota. Recently, two North Port residents were seriously injured when their sports utility vehicle (SUV) rolled over in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75, just after 11 a.m. on August 14, 2013.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, this single-vehicle Sarasota County car crash was caused by a tire blowout, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the SUV rolled over several times. It came to a rest about 30 feet off the interstate near mile marker 201, just past the S.R. 681 onramp.

The two occupants of the SUV, Jeffery Davis, 41, and Stephanie Sheppard, 33, were seriously injured and taken to Doctors Hospital in Sarasota for medical care. While we do not know at this time why the tire blew out, investigations are being conducted to determine the cause.

While some tire blowouts occur due to lack of maintenance, other blowouts occur due to tire defects, which include:

  • Manufacturing errors
  • Bad materials used
  • Adhesive breakdowns
  • Design flaws
  • Poor quality control

Tire companies like Bridgestone, Goodyear, Michelin and others have a responsibility to design tires correctly for motorists’ safety. If a tire is not designed or assembled correctly, or if bad materials are used, innocent people may suffer as a result.

If you were injured in a rollover accident in Florida due to a tire blowout, you may be entitled to financial compensation from the responsible tire company. Call an experienced Sarasota car accident attorney for help getting your tire inspected and knowing what to do following your crash. Tire care is important. Nobody wants to have to change a tire on the freeway, let alone "roll over several times" because of a blowout. Care for your tires, and always keep a spare in you vinyl tire cover; that's what it is there for.
