Transportation Safety Tips for Keeping Children Safe as They Go to School

Children are precious and deserve to be kept safe as they are traveling to and from school. While we know most parents do their part in protecting their kids and keeping them safe on the road, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has five tips for helping to keep kids safe while they are on the move and heading back to school this fall.

Because the start of school often signals a shift in travel patterns and more traffic on the road, children are often the victims of pedestrian accidents or other types of accidents as they are traveling to and from school. In order to keep children safe as they are walking, biking, or taking the bus to school, NHTSA would like parents and children alike to adopt these five safety habits:

  1. Walking safety. Pedestrian safety includes showing kids how to cross the street properly, such as learning how to look left-right-left for moving cars before crossing the street.  Also, school children younger than the age of 10 should always walk to and from school with an adult.
  2. Bike safety. Make sure your child wears a properly fitting bicycle helmet and that your son or daughter knows that bicycles have to follow the road rules.
  3. Bus safety. Teach your child to be careful around a bus and to never dart off of a bus to cross the street.
  4. Child passenger safety. Make sure children ride in the back seat, and that they are in proper car seats and booster seats for their age, height, and weight.
  5. Driving safety. Set a positive example for your kids and drive safely at all times—especially in school zones.

Help keep other children safe as they head back to school in Sarasota by sharing these tips on Facebook. You never know who you might help.
