South Florida is a wonderful place to ride a motorcycle because the weather, for the most part, is ideal. However, just because the weather is nice doesn’t mean that motorcycle accidents don’t happen. There are other factors besides the weather that contribute to Sarasota motorcycle crashes including lack of maintenance, excessive speed, failure to stop, swerving in and out of lanes, and driving drunk.

Some recent examples of motorcyclists’ behavior contributing to their own Florida accidents include:

  • Failing to slow – A 26-year-old Clearwater man failed to negotiate the curve on the I-275 exit ramp on I-4 and died in a Tampa motorcycle accident on Sunday, October 7, 2012. According to police, the motorcyclist lost control of the bike, it overturned, and he was ejected over the traffic barrier wall.
  • Weaving in and out of traffic – A 27-year old male motorcyclist from Seffner, was seen speeding and weaving in and out of lanes in Oldsmar on Sunday, October 7, 2012. Eventually, he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. Sadly, he died of his injuries.
  • Drunk driving – Police believe alcohol was a factor in a St. Petersburg motorcycle crash on October 26, 2012. The police indicated that the 46-year-old male rider was speeding and failed to navigate the curve in the road – scraping the curb. The bike left the roadway and the motorcyclist died of his injuries.

While other motorists’ actions are typically the cause of most motorcycle accidents, motorcyclists need to remember that their own actions can also help or hurt themselves.
